Berks county has many rural towns including Kutztown, Fleetwood, Oley, Each town has original one room school houses. Most are repurposed but not all of them! In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most American students attended a one-room schoolhouse. This continues today in the Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities. Both still use these schools for first through eighth grade. After eighth grade, formal education ends as the Amish believe too much education could break down their way of life and lead to worldly thinking. Each schoolhouse consists of one young, unmarried, usually female teacher, and 25-30 students. There are approximately 300 schools in Lancaster County. Did you know that you can go from Kindergarten to College on North 13th Street in Reading? Not quite a one-room school house but definitely a convenient way to get an education!
